Food insecurity is widespead in Benin, West Africa. Families do not make enough to feed their families nutritious food and education about organic farming is scarce. Bio-Benin is opening 1000 square metres of its farm to teach 30 local women how to grow organic fruits and vegetables to feed their families. They can sell any surplus in the marketplace. Instructors from Thrive for Good are helping us with this project, which will remain in perpetuity on the Bio-Benin farm.
Food insecurity in Benin is high and organic farming is not widely practiced. With skyrocketing costs for chemical fertilizers worldwide and improved health outcomes from organically grown produce, bio-production becomes the obvious answer.
By donating arable land and seeds and teaching local residents to farm organically using compost, organic pesticides and sustainable techniques, locals will have a constant supply of healthy food. Any surplus is theirs to keep or sell on the marketplace. Bio-Benin partnered with Thrive for Good to bring us organic farming expertise and help in motivating groups of local women to make this a sustainable effort.
This is a long-term, multiple-user project that will ensure the health and food production for some 100 local families over the next 25 years and more. Over time we will expand this work to other villages and other groups of women to give them long-term access to healthy food. Our goal is to expand this program to at least three other local villages over the next year and add others as our resources allow. Your donation can help make this happen.
