family planning

By Hope Okeny | family planning

We have wonderful news to share!

With invaluable support from GlobalGiving donors, we were able to reach more women through this program!  We are continuing to train more community health workers on sexual and reproductive health and family planning to enable them to raise awareness among other women in their communities.

We have learned that collaborating with community health workers, is a very effective way to provide essential and life-saving information to women regarding sexual and reproductive health and family planning services.

The generous support of donors (GlobalGiving inclusive), enabled us to send our senior clinical officer, Kevina Aza for training on safe family planning services. Kevina received training on reproductive health and family planning. She will organise educational events and sessions to share this valuable information with women and men in the communities.  She has already started preliminary discussions with them. This grassroots level engagement has proven to be very effective, as Community Health Workers are highly respected in their respective communities.  Their positions in their communities enables them to ensure that important information regarding reproductive health and family planning services reaches both men and women.

Since last year when the family planning programme was initiated, it showed a steady rise. However, within one month after receiving the training, 142 new family planning users have been reached.  The majority of them are in the age bracket of 25 to 30 years and have between three to four children.  This result demonstrates that this model of education is effective in reaching young women especially newly married women, who benefit from education regarding birth spacing.

We introduced a voucher system for the community health workers. This voucher is used to monitor how active a community health workers is. Our referral reports continue to demonstrate that “word of mouth” recommendations are important as well as effecgtive factors that influence women’s decisions to visit our clinics.

We are very grateful for the generous support of Marie Stoppes International’s project. Whose visual training materials has proved to be very effective in reaching a broad spectrum of women with reproductive health education irrespective of their level of education or literacy. Women have been trained and given knowledge on reproductive health and family planning.

This important work could not have been done without your support!  We will continue to update you on our efforts to reach even more women living in remote communities.
