PCA America: Child Abuse Prevention Month

By Lara Melnik | Giving Officer

Child Neglect is a Public Issue
Child Neglect is a Public Issue

In April Prevent Child Abuse America (PCA America) celebrated Child Abuse Prevention Month. In recognition, we’re proud to have partnered with Social Current to develop and now roll out Building Better Childhoods: a toolkit of new, easy-to-use resources to help organizations communicate about childhood adversity as a public, preventable, and solvable issue. Visit BuildingBetterChildhoods.org to learn more and share the toolkit with your networks.

This past month also presented a fantastic opportunity to support the reauthorization of the Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood and Home Visiting (MIECHV) Program. Myia Smith, an Healthy Families America (HFA) Support Specialist, and Erica Beck, an HFA program participant, both testified during a House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Worker and Family Support hearing on “Improving Family Outcomes through Home Visiting.” Representing Henry Booth House in Chicago, Myia and Erica offered their valuable perspectives on the importance and effectiveness of MIECHV-funded home visiting services.

"Home visiting changed our lives forever, and for the better because of Myia. She is helping me and Louis help our kids succeed," Erica shared during her testimony.

We are incredibly proud of Erica and Myia for their dedication and confidence throughout the entire process of preparing for the hearing, and for sharing their HFA experiences with the Members of Congress to support the important funding MIECHV provides to families. You can support families and help reauthorize MIECHV with this easy Action Alert to your local policymakers.

Your support helps make this important work possible! Thank you for being an advocate for children and families. Together, we can prevent child abuse, America…because childhood lasts a lifetime!
