With the support of donations from Global Giving, the clinic in Dar-es-Salaam is now fully functional, and serves as the only local source of healthcare for the entire community of 40,000+. Over the course of the past year, it has provided services including vaccination, pre and post-natal care, and healthcare education to over 20,000 people, including over 2,000 in the month of April alone.
In 2008, NEF also embarked on an AIDS awareness campaign run out of the health center facility, with the goal of educating the community about HIV spread and prevention techniques. As part of this project, NEF staged a number of community theater events to raise awareness, and provided training, transportation, and supplies to 65 local health volunteers. These volunteers have made several thousand home visits and estimate that they have provided important AIDS-related information to approximately 15,000 individuals.
NEF hopes eventually to guide the clinic toward sustainability through the sale of its potable water resources, but in order to reach this goal we need continued financial support in the short term. Your donations ensure that thousands of Sudanese refugees living in terrible conditions continue to receive this critical but otherwise unavailable service.
