Healthcare for 20,000 people in Ukraine

THREE YEARS

Three years ago, Iryna and her six children had to flee their home in Trostianets, Ukraine, when the fighting intensified. Since then, every day has been a struggle to survive. Her youngest daughter needs urgent surgery, and access to medical care is almost impossible: the nearest hospital is a three-hour walk away.

Thanks to the support of Médicos del Mundo, funded by the European Union, Iryna and her family receive essential medical care and psychological support. The mobile medical units not only treat illnesses, they also help heal the invisible wounds of trauma.

“There is a common belief that seeking help is a sign of weakness. Many are afraid to admit they are struggling,” says Alla, a psychologist with Doctors of the World. “But real strength lies in having the courage to ask for help. Our role is to offer understanding and personalized support to help people regain their emotional stability and rebuild their lives.”

Medicos del Mundo's help goes beyond psychological support. We provide medical consultations, essential medicines and outreach visits for those who cannot access health centers. Within the program 25 health centers have received direct support, ensuring continued medical services in the affected areas.

“Without their help, our situation would be much worse,” says Iryna. “Here we feel supported, cared for and hopeful that one day we will return home.”

The EU-funded Médicos del Mundo program continues to play a vital role in restoring access to healthcare in the worst-affected regions of Ukraine. To date, nearly 19,000 people have been helped through the initiative, and this number continues to grow. Thanks to mobile medical units and humanitarian aid, thousands of families like Iryna's are regaining access to healthcare and the hope of rebuilding their lives.

War in a wheelchair

“I finally feel free,” says Grigory Fomenko, 69, after the long journey he undertook because of the serious illness that left him stranded unable to walk eight years ago and who now has a wheelchair that allows him to get around.

Grigory lived in the village of Kovsharivka, near Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region. When his legs failed, neighbors helped the lonely man survive. Some volunteered to go shopping at the store, others prepared food for him. And then the war began. Grigory Fomenko reluctantly recalls the events of 2022. He recalls how the music school was bombed near his home, but the windows of the apartment miraculously remained unharmed. All the neighbors suddenly moved out. The man remained the sole inhabitant of the five-story apartment building. Sometimes, clinging to the railing, he would go down to the courtyard to ask passersby to buy him food.

After some time, he was finally admitted to a hospital and transferred to a nursing home in Kharkiv, where he has been living for a few months now and where he has a wheelchair that has changed his life. Médicos del Mundo, with the financial support of the Ukrainian Humanitarian Foundation (UHF), donated six wheelchairs for people with disabilities to the nursing home. Grigory was one of the recipients. For the first time in eight years, he had the opportunity to move around.

"Now I am in a very good mood. Every day I go outside.I can breathe fresh air, enjoy nature," he explains.

The donation of assistive devices is part of Médicos del Mundo emergency response in Ukraine to improve living conditions and access to health, emergency and care services for vulnerable groups, mainly people with disabilities, the elderly and people with reduced mobility.

Specifically, since the start of this project last spring until today, Médicos del Mundo has donated hearing aids, folding walkers, canes and crutches, biological toilets, orthopedic mattresses and wheelchairs. Specifically, 221 wheelchairs have been delivered to boarding schools, social welfare institutions, individuals and health centers in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Medicos del Mundo has been working in Ukraine for many years, long before the onset of the war. We have the following projects in Ukraine that are currently running thanks to the cooperation between the Ukranian Health Ministery and Médicos del Mundo:

Strengthening the resilience of the health system and the community of the Donbass region, east of the country . Direct beneficiary population: 21,348 people. Indirect population: 136,569 people.
Improve access to and availability of quality health care services for the population affected by the conflict . Direct beneficiary population 62,380 people. Indirect beneficiary population: 496,000 people.
Increasing the capacity of the health system to respond to the emergency in the east (Luhansk NGCA) Direct beneficiary population: 21,000 people.
Ensure access to comprehensive health services for the conflict-affected population, including the most vulnerable groups (elderly, persons with disabilities, survivors of gender-based violence), both the host population and the internally displaced population in highly affected areas . Direct beneficiary population: 16,616 people.
Improve access to quality primary health care for the population affected by the conflict D. Indirect population: 430,000 people.
To meet the urgent health needs of the population affected by the armed conflict in the East by supporting public health services) Direct and indirect beneficiary population: 25,000 people.

Our aim is to alleviate suffering wilsth empowering people and health system for the future after war period.
