YRS spent a lot of time in 2015 developing our second Five Year Strategic Plan, the major components of which are based on our new aspirational statement:
“Towards 2020 YRS will ensure fewer Balinese women develop female cancers, and more enjoy good sexual and reproductive health.”
To realize this, in 2016 we are introducing two new programs and expanding our Mobile Clinic program:
Portable Ultrasound Machine Services
To greatly increase our accuracy in detecting breast cancer, we have purchased a portable Ultrasound Machine. In early April, our staff will receive operational and basic diagnostic training from two doctors who are kindly flying to Bali to donate their time and expertise.
See & Treat
We have started socialization of our new See & Treat program, which has proved successful in contributing to cervical cancer prevention in Indonesia and many low-resource regions around the world. Soon we will commence operational training for the cryotherapy equipment used to treat abnormal cervical cells. In January, we received a visit from Aubrey Cody, a senior consultant at Global Health Visions, an organization which offers creative solutions to some of today’s most pressing health and development challenges. Aubrey introduced YRS to Cervical Cancer ACTION, a global coalition to stop cervical cancer. We’re looking forward to joining the global efforts to reduce cervical cancer, which, despite being the number one cancer killer of women in the world, is easily preventable.
Mobile Clinic Program
After a very successful Mobile Clinic in Bontihing Village, West Singaraja last October, where YRS staff received 290 clients, we will be expanding our Mobile Clinic program to East Singaraja this year. At the end of January, we conducted a follow-up mobile clinic in Bontihing to deliver client results and give more detailed explanations. The night before the mobile clinic, YRS conducted a Peer Educator training session in the Balai Banjar, which was very successful because it was informal and the women felt very welcome and comfortable. Seven women were trained during this session to share information about sexual and reproductive health among their friends and family.
International Conference on Family Planning
On 25 January, we received a group of international journalists in Bali for the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP). After listening to a presentation by Dr Sari, they observed a big group discussion about various sexual and reproductive health issues, and participated in a tour of Pasar Badung conducted by our Peer Educators. While on the tour they witnessed YRS staff conducting outreach among merchants and shoppers, and also tried some exotic fruits. The following week Dr Sari attended a number of sessions at ICFP, where she had the honour of meeting former Indonesian President Habibie and Prof. Dr Tahir, one of Indonesia’s greatest philanthropists.
Due to ICFP, family planning, along with sexual and reproductive health, was a ‘hot topic’ in Indonesia throughout January. To enable its viewers to learn more, and also learn about YRS’ services, a journalist from SCTV recorded an interview with Dr Sari, which was aired nationally. To watch the interview click here.
YRS is looking forward to a year which is hopefully just as action-packed as the first two months, and as always we say a very big “Terima kasih banyak” to all of our wonderful supporters.
