Peace Winds urgently needs help to run the only primary and maternal health care clinic serving 21,000+ people at Gorom refugee camp in South Sudan. A large influx of Sudanese refugees fleeing a bloody civil war has strained the camp far beyond capacity, pushing basic services, including healthcare, past their limits. Funds will be used to pay health workers, stock the health center with medical supplies and equipment, and expand essential services like maternity care.
Gorom's population has surged in recent years, stretching the health center thin. Despite heroic efforts by the small team of staff, care is woefully inadequate. Long wait times prevent patients from getting timely treatment. Pregnant women do not have access to 24/7 care. And many children cannot get the primary care they need to thrive. Resources were too tight even before the recent population increase, and sharp cuts to U.S. foreign assistance are exacerbating these issues.
Donations will increase Peace Winds' capacity to provide basic support at Gorom's health center. This includes: Staff salaries, including doctors, nurses, midwives, mental health professionals, and lab technicians; essential medications and necessities like testing kits, cleaning supplies, and basic medical supplies; maintenance and repair of clinic facilities, like its medical waste incinerator, sinks, and toilets; and cholera prevention activities.
Basic needs are going unmet for refugees in South Sudan, but support for our work at Gorom Primary Health Center will save lives. Clinic staff will be better equipped to support patients suffering from treatable conditions, ensure the well-being of mothers and their babies, and stop the spread of preventable diseases.
