Project Report on

“Health & Hope for Ethiopia’s Displaced Mothers” (#71969)
Submitted to the GlobalGiving Community
December 18, 2025

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

Over the past three months, Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO) has continued its life-saving work to protect the health, dignity, and wellbeing of displaced mothers through our project “Health & Hope for Ethiopia’s Displaced Mothers.”

Conflict, displacement, drought, and limited access to healthcare have placed pregnant and lactating women among the most vulnerable groups in Ethiopia. This project addresses these urgent needs by delivering maternal healthcare services, nutrition support, psychosocial care, and dignity assistance, ensuring that displaced mothers are not left behind during crisis.

Thanks to your generous support, mothers are receiving care, hope is being restored, and lives are being protected.

Progress So Far

From September to December 2025, FUGAO implemented maternal health and protection interventions in Afar, Amhara, Oromia, and Southern Ethiopia, focusing on:

  • Pregnant and lactating women
  • Displaced and conflict-affected mothers
  • Women with limited access to healthcare
  • Mothers caring for infants and young children

In collaboration with local health facilities, mobile health teams, midwives, and community health volunteers, services were delivered directly to displacement sites and underserved communities.

Major Achievements (September – December 2025)

1. Maternal Health Services

  • Provided antenatal and postnatal care to 1,350 displaced mothers
  • Facilitated safe delivery support for 210 pregnant women through referrals and birth kits
  • Conducted maternal health screenings (anemia, blood pressure, nutrition) for 1,700 women
  • Supported newborn care and immunization referrals for 980 infants

2. Nutrition Support for Mothers & Infants

  • Distributed nutritious food supplements to 1,100 pregnant and lactating women
  • Provided infant feeding counseling to 900 mothers
  • Supported growth monitoring for 760 infants and young children

3. Dignity Kits & Women’s Protection

  • Distributed 1,400 dignity kits (sanitary pads, soap, underwear, baby care items)
  • Conducted menstrual hygiene education sessions in displacement sites
  • Established women-friendly safe spaces in 5 communities

4. Psychosocial Support & Health Education

  • Delivered group psychosocial support sessions to 1,200 mothers
  • Trained 35 community health volunteers on maternal mental health and referrals
  • Conducted health awareness sessions on pregnancy, nutrition, hygiene, and newborn care

Early Impact & Stories of Hope

Safe Motherhood Restored – Afar
After fleeing conflict, 26-year-old Fatuma missed antenatal care for months. Through FUGAO’s mobile health services, she received checkups and a safe delivery referral.

“I was afraid for my baby. Now I feel protected and hopeful.”

Dignity in Displacement – Amhara
Women receiving dignity kits report increased confidence, comfort, and the ability to participate in community life with dignity.

Healing Hearts – Oromia
Mothers attending psychosocial sessions report reduced stress, better bonding with their babies, and renewed emotional strength.

Challenges We Encountered

Despite progress, several challenges affected implementation:

  • Limited access to healthcare facilities in remote displacement sites
  • Shortages of medical supplies due to supply chain disruptions
  • Cultural barriers preventing some women from seeking care
  • Poor nutrition and food insecurity affecting maternal health

FUGAO addressed these challenges by strengthening mobile outreach, engaging female health workers, and working closely with community leaders.

What’s Next? (January – March 2026)

In the next quarter, FUGAO plans to:

  • Expand mobile maternal health clinics to new displacement sites
  • Support 2,000 additional mothers with health and nutrition services
  • Provide clean delivery kits to pregnant women
  • Strengthen referral systems for high-risk pregnancies
  • Scale maternal mental health support
  • Train 50 additional community health volunteers

Sustainability & Long-Term Vision

Our long-term approach focuses on:

  • Strengthening community-based maternal health systems
  • Training local midwives and health volunteers
  • Linking mothers to government health services
  • Promoting nutrition-sensitive programming
  • Integrating mental health into maternal care

By 2030, FUGAO aims to support 60,000 displaced and vulnerable mothers with quality maternal health and protection services.
