Dear GlobalGiving Donors,

Another year is soon coming to an end and this is the summary of the activities and results we had accomplished in 2016:

Early childhood stimulation

At the early stimulation center “Arrumacos”, we contributed to the cognitive, social, physical and psychological development of 24 children aged 0 to 4. Through assessment we can detect key areas for the correct development of children’s abilities.

This year, the center has been improved, and the methodology has been adjusted in order to promote greater autonomy and children participation.

Nutrition

We helped 24 girls and boys aged 0 to 4 improve their nutritional condition, giving them proper nutrition and having a monthly monitoring of weight and height.

As a result of our nutritional diagnosis, one boy and three girls were referred to a health center for medical assessment, treatment and monitoring.

Parenting workshops

This year we had 9 workshops with the parents to teach them about nutrition, health, parenthood skills, violence prevention and childhood rights.

Right to Protection from all forms of abuse

Children are highly prone to experience situations of violence and abuse at the family, school and work levels and even amongst themselves. Physical punishment and verbal violence are common in family discipline where it is considered to be the only way children learn. The risk of suffering violence is higher for girls.

Melel Xojobal seeks to increase the capacity of children to defend and denounce any act of violence against them. We also have workshops for parents on this specific issue, raising awareness about the consequences of punishment and violence can have on their children, promoting parenting guidelines based on communication and mutual respect.

We want to thank GlobalGiving and all the generous people who contribute to promote the rights of children in Chiapas.
