Summary

Kids with critical illnesses frequently experience pain, fear, depression and anxiety. Each week, CHAP rolls colorful art carts onto hospital floors in the Portland area, offering patients and their families a chance to step away from the stress and trauma of daily treatments and experience the healing power of art. Research shows, art promotes physical, mental and emotional recovery. Donations will help CHAP expand inpatient and outpatient programs and reach underserved communities.

Challenge

Children with critical or chronic illnesses and life-altering disabilities often face pain, fear, depression, anxiety, and isolation. They may struggle with a lack of control over their lives, and the physical changes resulting from illness, injury, or disability can be devastating. These challenges also place a significant emotional and physical strain on their families.

Solution

CHAP's Hospital Art programs offer an ever-evolving selection of art supplies, projects, and guidance from trained teaching artists. These sessions help provide a creative outlet amidst the challenges of their medical journeys. CHAP transforms the hospital environment into a colorful and uplifting space, giving kids a break from its sometimes intimidating atmosphere. CHAP's Art Club brings art-making experiences to our studio after the child is discharged, continuing the healing art experience.

Long-Term Impact

CHAP's program helps patients and family members cope; encourages compliance with treatment plans; increases self-confidence; encourages self-expression during difficult times; reduces stress, pain, isolation, and anxiety; and contributes to overall well-being. Emerging research has shown that art can improve patient outcomes. It also benefits parents, where they can find a caring community where they feel supported and share with others experiencing similar trauma.
