The school year is almost over and that means the Vocations for the Future pilot project is winding down. On 30th June we will celebrate the end of the first year with a ceremony for the approximately 40 vulnerable teenagers who have completed sewing or electrician training. While this is a foundational level course, we have given these youth useful skills so that they can see whether they’d like to continue to the second level, or whether their gifting lies in another field. We will be inviting the mayor, stakeholders in the project and key members of the community to join the students in commemorating their completion of the course. At the ceremony the youth and their parents will share about the personal impact of the training on their families, and we will recognise certain students for special growth in character.
This training is not just about gaining new skills, but about building trust with these families and helping the youth build confidence in themselves. As we look back on this year and on to the next, we want our youth to take pride in their accomplishments and celebrate their success!
The end of the school year means that children participating in the residential centre are looking forward to a long summer of fun and activities. We are delighted that all of them have continued with school until the end of the year. The children of abuse victims are much more vulnerable to dropping out of education and are often behind academically, so even just regular attendance is a success!
In May we were pleased to welcome a trainer from Canada to teach some of the beneficiaries to make bags from recycled clothing. They made some beautiful products. We hope that there might be an opportunity to develop this and use it to make some income to help the women support themselves and their children, thus helping to reduce their vulnerability and the exposure to the risk of violence.
Thank you again for all of your support for this project through RED International. You are helping these vulnerable women, children and youth to build a better and more sustainable future for themselves and their communities.
We would be grateful if you would share this report with your friends and wider networks.
