Reflecting on Success: Our Journey Through 2024

Mexico – May 2024 – Surgery Mission with Guest Dr. Eric Griffiths

Our incredible participants included Surgeons of Hope Co-chair Richard Duron from NYC, Dr. Eric Griffiths, Associate Professor of Surgery at the Primary Children’s Hospital and The University of Utah, and Dr. Kshitij Mistry, Director of Quality & Outcomes Program and Associate at the Department of Cardiology from Boston Children’s Hospital. From May 2nd to May 5th, they spent five days at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gómez focused on pediatric heart operations and collaborating with the local team for training. Together, they performed critical pediatric heart surgeries with local professionals and provided essential training.

Paraguay – May 2024 – Surgery and Training Mission with Guest Dr. Liliana Ferrin (Argentina)

We had the pleasure of organizing another mission at the Hospital General Pediátrico Acosta Ñu. Dr. Liliana Ferrin, specializing in interventional catheterization for congenital heart diseases, performed thirteen interventions. Typically, the hospital performs six to eight catheterizations a month, so achieving a higher number of procedures and providing continuous training to local staff marked a significant success for our mission in Paraguay.

Paraguay – May 2024 – Training Mission with Guest Teacher Dr. Juan Manuel Bonelli (Argentina)

This course provided extensive knowledge of cardiac CT and MRI for congenital heart diseases, aiming to improve the analysis and interpretation of images in various clinical contexts. With this training, the medical team will align itself closer to the standards of international healthcare centers, where MRI and CT cardiac imaging are fundamental for pediatric cardiologists. Notably, the Hospital General Pediátrico Niños de Acosta Ñu currently lacks a specialist in MRI and CT imaging for congenital heart diseases, making this the first course of its level and comprehensiveness in the country.

Paraguay – July 2024 – Surgery Mission with Guest Surgeons Dr. Christian Kreutzer (Argentina)

As our relationship with the Hospital General Pediátrico Acosta Ñu grows, we better understand how Surgeons of Hope can best serve their young patients. This mission featured Dr. Christian Kreutzer, Head of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery at Hospital Universitario Austral in Argentina, along with surgeons Dr. Benjamin Chiostri and intensive care specialist Dr. Rafael Fraire. Together, they performed complex surgeries on six children and provided high-profile training to the local medical staff.Future Missions for 2024

We are continuing on our journey in 2024 with more impactful missions, including:

  • Early July – Mexico at Children's Hospital Federico Gómez: Led by Dr. Gabriel Cassalet from Colombia
  • End of July – Costa Rica at Children's Hospital Dr. Carlos Luis Sáenz Herrera: Led by Dr. Christian Pizarro from the United States
  • Early September – Costa Rica at Children's Hospital Dr. Carlos Luis Sáenz Herrera: Led by Dr. Eric Griffith from the United States
  • End of September – Paraguay at Pediatric Hospital Niños de Acosta Ñu: Led by Dr. Medrano from Spain
  • End of October – Paraguay at Pediatric Hospital Niños de Acosta Ñu: Led by Dr. Forbess from the United States

These missions will transform many lives and lay the foundation for even stronger medical teams who will continue our work. We look forward to making significant strides and sharing the journey with you!
