Pick Up Uganda project is addressing outdoor plastic waste in Uganda. It promotes public participation in cleanups, collection, sorting and recycling of plastic waster and product development to reduce plastic waste pollution for environment protection. This project encourages industry collaboration and policy advocacy to manage waste effectively. Through community-driven actions, the project promotes a cleaner environment.
Uganda faces a major plastic pollution challenge with approximately only 5% of plastics are recycled-most end up in dumpsites, burned, or scattered across the environment. There is serious need to actively engage in collection, awareness, and recycling of the wastes to make useful products furniture, use recycled plastic bottles to build eco bricks for housing, thus blending environmental action with community empowerment.
This project will work and empower community leaders and organizations to implement plastic waste pickup, sorting and recycling across Uganda to curb the huge challenge of pollution. Institutional and community collection, and recycling centers will be established. Form and train local recyclers, formalize and provide technical assistance to meet recycling standards. Conduct campaigns to promote awareness in communities.
This project will help educate and empower local communities, establish centres, plants to take care of the environment and improve their living conditions through employment and income in the plastic waste recycling supply chain. The trainings and awareness campaigns will empower communities and create self-awareness leading to environment protection.
