Two containers were shipped to Cuba in the fall of 2015 to support the ongoing Santiago relief and improve the conditions in the pediatric hospital: Cuba#15-126 will support Hospital Pediatrico Sur with furnishings, instruments and supplies. Special attention was provided to patient room chairs to improve the comfort of pediatric oncology patients and their families, customized wheelchairs to accomodate the various transport needs in the hospital and instruments general, opthalmic and orthopedic pediatric surgery. The seond beneficiary in this shipment is Hospital Psiquiatrico - El Viso, which is the second psychiatric hospital for the region. It was so severly damaged by Hurricane Sandy that our support could not begin until 2015 due to the long period of reconstruction. Office furnishings, crank beds and basic medical supplies were provided to increase patient and staff comfort.
Cuba#15-127 focused on Laboratory equipment and supplies to suport Hospital Materno Sur and the Provincial Laboratory of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology. This new lab is a $1.6M CMN project that aims to not only improve the laboratory processing capabilities in the province but also reduce the overburdening of the labs at the main hospitals. Specialized microbiology and epidemiological testing will happen here as well as SUMA testing, Cuba’s self designed ultramicroanalytic system to detect congenital malformations. Lab will meet ISO standards. Global Links was able to support the lab by providing key materials needed that did not make it into the scope of the project budget.
A third beneficiary of the shipment will be Hospital Pediatrico Norte, a non-surgical pediatric hospital that specializes in intensive therapy and infectious diseases. Global Links support focused on office furnishings to increase staff comfort and cribs to improve patient care.
Special support for both shipments was provided by Matter, a St. Louis Park-based nonprofit with a mission to expand access to health and food around the world. See article below.
With Phase 3 complete we thank you for your support and look forward to sharing our next project in Cuba with you. Salud!
