Let me share with you some of the ongoing successful initiatives made possible by the GlobalGiving Head Start project. They include inter alia, pedagogical materials, training of teachers, and payment of teachers for 12 months compared to the previous 10 months. These initiatives have enhanced the quality of education offered to the 200 children who are attending the three sections of the preschool program in 2016-2017.An assessment of all first graders revealed that the students who came from other schools were having difficulties keeping up. Consequently, a remedial program was put in place to assist those students.
The head of the pre-school Autllde played a key role in taking advantage of 200 donated children’s literature books to spark the preschoolers’ interest in learning and discovery. Furthermore, teachers are also using the books to prepare their classes. We expect 400 additional donated books will be added to the collection in the coming months. The children, including 5-year-old Josette, shown in the picture above are very excited. For almost all of them selecting a book of stories and trying to read it is a new and exciting experience. A challenge will be to develop the students’ lifelong reading habits. Ecole Notre Dame du Perpetuel Secours is the only primary school in Petite Riviere de l’ Artibonite, where the school is located, to have a library, modest though it may be.
