The year 2023 has been holding strong between weekly crew efforts and special forest events. In June HER began its 7th systematic pass, which means we succeeded in covering the entire restoration site within one year as projected!!!
Besides HER own special Spring Equinox, Hawaii Native Plant Month/ Earth week (planting of 55 native seedlings), and Summer Solstice events (planting of 60 native seedlings), we facilitated several special community and school group events in the forest so far (Pacific Quest, Keaau Middle School, Sabah Kinder Art (SKA) from Georgia)!
Though we have been expecting the onset of a summer drought, so far the soil is still moist, and plant world still vibrant! With climate change at hand, we don’t take these gifts for granted. We deeply appreciate how every event finds both the regulars, and the new faces, always it seems coming up with an adequate number of helpers! The rain follows the forest, and so thank you dear volunteers and donors for supporting our restoration efforts!
Aside from efforts in the forest, we build upon a rich network of natural resource researchers and managers. Among them, HER is now part of the Lowland Wet Forest Working Group to explore among Hilo Professionals, restoration strategies for each of our project locations in the general region on the Big Island of Hawai'i.
