Keeping Five Girls’ Dreams Within Reach

A psychologist. A doctor. An accountant.

When the first five recipients of the Hallie Ladelle Scruggs Scholarship Fund wrote to supporters, they shared more than their thanks. They shared hopes for the people they want to become. Your generosity is helping give those hopes something essential: the opportunity to keep learning.

As another school year begins, thank you for investing in Danica, Diana, Lavenal, Rosemine, and Julien—and in the education that can help them shape their own futures.

An Education Worth Staying Connected To

The Andrew Grene School’s latest annual report describes a difficult 2025–2026 school year. Insecurity and displacement prevented many students from attending regularly, even though the campus remained secure. Teachers moved lessons online within days, stayed in touch with displaced families, and resumed face-to-face instruction when conditions improved.

These were schoolwide efforts, but they speak directly to the importance of the commitment you have made through the Hallie scholarship. For these five girls, financial support and a school determined to sustain learning are both vital. Their ambitions need room to grow, even when circumstances make the next step difficult.

In her earlier letter, Danica put the importance of your encouragement simply: “Your support gives me strength. It helps me work hard and stay focused.”

That is a meaningful reminder of what a scholarship can represent to a child: practical help, and the knowledge that someone believes her education is worth investing in.

What the Opportunity to Learn Makes Possible

The school’s annual report also helps us understand the educational opportunities these scholarships open to the girls.

Danica previously described her excitement at using a computer for the first time. This year, the school reported installing 36 desktop computers and continuing instruction in computer literacy, office applications, and programming. For students with little access to technology elsewhere, those opportunities can expand both their skills and their sense of what is possible.

The library and textbook loan program help students access the materials they need without adding to families’ financial burdens. The school also reported maintaining its commitment to hot meals and restoring full meal service when in-person classes resumed—an important part of the school day that Danica herself had appreciated.

These services are part of the learning environment the girls can access through their scholarships. Your support helps them pursue an education that nourishes their abilities, curiosity, and confidence.

A Commitment That Reaches Beyond One School Year

The Hallie scholarship was established with a long view: helping these girls complete their education at the Andrew Grene School, with the possibility of continuing at the University of Fondwa, if they choose.

Their interests may evolve as they grow. What matters is that they have the opportunity to discover their strengths and make informed choices about their futures.

Hallie’s memory lives on in this commitment to other children’s learning and possibilities. There is something deeply hopeful in knowing that a gift made in her name can help a girl continue her education and imagine the life she wants to build.

Please consider renewing your support or making an additional gift to help sustain these five girls’ scholarships. Thank you for helping carry this promise forward, one school year at a time.
