The Hallie Ladelle Scruggs Haiti Scholarship Fund

The Hallie Scholarship Fund was created to help young women in Haiti who might otherwise be unable to attend secondary school because of financial barriers stay in school, pursue their education, and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities. This quarter, that support proved especially important.

On May 18, rising violence and insecurity forced the temporary closure of Andrew Grene High School. While the school itself remained safe, travel became too dangerous for students and staff, and many families were displaced from their homes.

Rather than allowing students’ education to come to a halt, teachers quickly launched a remote learning program. Within days, Hallie Scholars and their classmates were back in class online, continuing their studies despite extraordinary challenges.

The response has been inspiring. Attendance grew from 98 to 156 students in just three days—a 60% increase. Student surveys showed that 68% felt highly motivated, 74% were satisfied or very satisfied with online learning, and 87% rated their classes as good or very good.

These achievements are even more remarkable considering that more than half of participating students rely on borrowed phones to attend classes.

One student shared, “Even far from my neighborhood, I can continue school and keep hope.” Another explained, “Classes help us not to give up despite everything that is happening.”

In-person learning resumed about two weeks later.

For the young women supported through the Hallie Scholarship Fund, education is more than academic achievement. It is stability in a time of uncertainty, opportunity in the face of adversity, and a pathway toward leadership and independence.
