August 2026 Update: Haiti Earthquake Recovery

By Trina Cubanski | Community Giving Associate

Dear friend,

On behalf of all our staff and patients, thank you for your generous giving to Partners In Health (PIH)! We are so grateful for your partnership in providing high-quality health care and social support to patients in Haiti.

Haiti is currently experiencing a humanitarian crisis spurred by political instability, escalating gang violence, and natural disasters. The crisis has opened a new chapter of structural violence in Haiti, building on centuries of oppression, exploitation, and neglect. In the face of mounting operational challenges, your support has helped Zanmi Lasante (ZL), PIH’s sister organization in Haiti, continue to serve patients and provide a preferential option for the most vulnerable, remaining nimble and effective in the face of formidable constraints.

Between March and June of 2026, over 5.83 million Haitians (52 percent of the population) experienced high levels of acute food insecurity, including 19-month-old Leila. When shewas admitted to a ZL-supported hospital, Leila’s body showed clear signs of severe malnutrition. She was severely underweight with swollen legs and was constantly fatigued.

Staff from ZL immediately administered Nourimanba, a locally produced peanut-based therapeutic food rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Nourimanba is one of the most effective and accessible tools for treating childhood malnutrition, and after just a few days, Leila started regaining her strength. Her cheeks, once sunken, gradually filled out.“Now she’s laughing again. She eats, she plays,” said her mother, Dina.

Nourimanbais produced at a state-of-the-art PIH facility in Haiti, which stimulates the local economy by producing local jobs and larger markets for peanut farmers, addressing malnutrition at its root: poverty.

Your partnership has helped provide lifesaving care to patients like Leila, even during times of emergency. While the challenges ahead are tremendous, the determination and dedication of ZL staff continue to give optimism to patients, providers, and the global movement for health equity. Thank you for being a part of this movement.

With gratitude,
Partners In Health
