Haiti Goat Project Update April 2020

Dear Friends of the Haiti Goat Project,

First and foremost, thank you for all of your support of the Haiti Goat Project.  Your donations make our project possible and we want you to know how very much your support is appreciated.

The Covid-19 pandemic is increasing its presence in Haiti and it appears that it is circulating in Port-au-Prince. Because Haiti’s healthcare system is extremely fragile, it will be a major challenge to deal with the effects of the virus spread as it continues to gain a foothold. Schools throughout Haiti have been shut down this month in an effort to control the spread of the virus.

On the good news side, our Farm-to-Fork program has been operating during the months of December, January, February, and March. This means that each week during that time our team has been able to serve 850 Chili Kabrit to hungry school children in rural Haiti, making a huge contribution to fight malnutrition in the communities we serve. As noted above, schools are shut down in April but we are hopeful that they will resume in May and we can continue meal services. Some more good news...our team in Gressier was able to purchase and install a new stovetop with 4 commercial-sized burners. This will help with expanding our Chili Kabrit service to reach our next target goal of serving 1,250 meals per week to these rural school children.

We have just completed our kidding season and there are now 51 healthy goat kids, 20 females and 31 males, in our barn. This brings our total herd count to 98 animals. Dlous, our farm manager did a wonderful job managing all the new moms and babies and has already given the new kids their first-round of goat vaccinations (yes, goat kids get vaccinations too!). Dlous also had a new sliding gate installed in the barn so our moms and their kids are better protected from feral dogs and other night predators. Once our new kids grow up, they will be available to Haitian communities as breeding animals to improve the quality of their local goat herds.

Again thank you very much for your willingness to support this project.  Please know that you are truly making a difference in the lives of many Haitian children and their communities.

With warmest regards,

Char
