For more than 105 years, Graduate Women International has advanced education, gender equality, and leadership opportunities for women and girls worldwide. Our vision is for the safe access to quality education beyond primary school and the opportunity for every girl to reach her full potential. Through global advocacy, policy engagement at the United Nations, and locally driven micro-projects, GWI works to address education and economic sustainability barriers for all women and girls.
Globally, 273 million children and youth are out of school, and millions more do not complete secondary education. UNESCO estimates the world needs 44 million additional teachers by 2030 to achieve universal primary and secondary education. Girls continue to face barriers to advancing in education, particularly where qualified teachers, safe schools, and pathways to higher education are limited. Investment is urgently needed.
Through partnership with donors, GWI advances girls' education through targeted advocacy, policy engagement, and locally driven education initiatives at the community, national, and international levels. Drawing on more than 105 years of experience, GWI works to address barriers limiting girls' access to secondary and higher education, including shortages of qualified teachers, unequal access to learning opportunities, and limited pathways to continued study. Increased investment is critical.
Approximately 8000 women and girls globally have been positively impacted by the GWI various projects since 2016, and nearly 40 projects have been successfully implemented since 2016 in 17 countries. Funding the GWI Education for Brighter Futures program supports practical education initiatives that expand access to secondary and higher education for girls and women. Through advocacy, scholarships, teacher training, and community-based projects, the program addresses critical education barriers.
