Dear donors, friends, and supporters,
We hope the summer is treating you well! We would like to take this time to thank you so much for your ongoing support and donations, and update you on the status of our project.
Gulu Women’s Economic Development & Globalization (GWED-G) staff is working very hard and making a lot of progress! Last month planting season started in Gulu, Uganda, but many women were lacking seeds so were unable to plant all the crops they would’ve hoped. We’re currently exploring other methods, such as seed donations, to ensure food security and that these women receive seeds by the next planting season.
Earlier this year, on March 8th for International Women’s Day GWED-G funded many sensitization projects in schools to discourage child marriage, promote female education & empowerment, and gender equity. During this time GWED-G distributed countless educational and advocacy materials.
Other programs GWED-G has delivered to the community include helping Village Health Teams (VHTs) deliver grassroots healthcare and family planning services to isolated rural communities that are far from health clinics, by funding much needed bicycles, as well as bicycle repairs. Recently, there were meetings with the VHTs to refine data collection during home visits.
On Columbia University’s campus, we spent our spring semester busy fundraising for GWED-G as well. Among other events, we’ve hosted a successful GlobeMed gala, fortune cookies fundraiser, Krispy Kreme donuts sales, and a dumpling deliveries fundraiser. In terms of advocacy, we recently watched Salud, a documentary about the effectiveness of Cuba’s cash-strapped healthcare system, and hosted a panel with leading professionals on Global Health & Foreign Policy, with a special interest in HIV.
We sent our yearly batch of interns to Gulu to experience all the magic of GWED-G in May/June! They returned with full hearts and fond memories of their time with Pam (GWED-G's founder and CEO), and time spent revising next year's budget, interviewing beneficiaries, creating deliverables, taking part in role model men meetings, and more. Stay tuned for an update from the interns!
GWED-G’s wonderful programs such as income generation, village savings and loans associations, agricultural trainings, role model men, sensitization meetings, war rehabilitation, integrated health sessions, and village health workers are currently in 10 districts. But GWED-G knows that it can have an even greater impact if it expands to 18 districts, which may be possible with the help of donors like yourself. With your support, GWED-G can continue to reach overlooked and underserved, vulnerable populations. We cannot thank you enough for all the change you enable through your generous donations.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments, and continue to follow our activities on our websites and social media platforms!
Cheers,
Tulsi Patel
