Juanita lives with her two older brothers and her mother in a rural community in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. Her mother and one of her brothers go out to work on fileds of corn and beans, that is their only family income, earning 36 Quetzales each (4.8 USD) for a day from sunrise to sunset.
Juanita has only one dream to finish middle school. Under current conditions this will not be possible and even worst her probabilities of becoming a young mother are very high, situation which is not legal but rarely reported to the authorities.
Plan Guatemala identified and met Juanita , a scholarship was given to her, covering registration fees, uniform, and school supplies to start her first year of middle school at a “Telesecundaria Institute” of a neighboring community, located 7 miles away which she walks all the days of school.
Juanita at 13 years, knows her rights and every day she wants to learn new things, that will allow her to have better opportunities, she advises her friends to make an effort to keep at schooll because it is worth building a better future.
With Global Giving, Plan International seeks to sponsor 50 rural girls, we have to continue working very hard to achieve this goal!
“My dream is to finish 3 years of middle school, this scholarship will help me achieve it. In the future I would like to continue my studies so I can have a career so my life and the lifes of those arround me can be changed. I know that will come true one day” (Juanita)
