This past fall MayaWorks began a new venture: an intergenerational weaving school. Women young and old come together to learn new weaving techniques from each other and also receive self esteem workshops. This is all in an effort to empower women to put an end to domestic violence and ake control of their future.
When women come together in a safe place to learn from each other, they are able to share their struggles together and seek support from one another. Many have expressed concerns with their husbands or boyfriends and have shared their problems wth depression. The workshop leaders are skilled in guiding women to seek out professional services if needed.
The sessions generally start with a workshop on self esteem and culminate in a weaving class. The women say that not only do they receive support and new weaving skills but it's also time away from their daily routines which they love. It's fun having a break every now and then!
MayaWorks is implementing this program as a model which we hope to replicate in other communities. Thank you to our donors for assiting us to empower women and help them reach their goals!
