Artisans from the Xetonox and Agua Caliente areas recently met with students of the University of Itzmo in Guatemala to begin collaboration on an 18 month design project that will culminate in new products for the 2012 fall season. Students surveyed the artisans to determine their current skills and the areas that need further development. Based on the artisans skill-base and market demands, new handcrafted products will be created for sale in the U.S. market and will be featured in Guatemala at the New World Craft Fair in September 2012. We're counting on these products being great sellers that will allow us to provide more work for Maya women.
Daughters of artisans are also busy with school activities. Recently, students from the Rosa Moya tutoring center participated in a retreat focused on how to excel academically. In addition to working on developing solid study skills, girls reflected on their academic and career aspirations and created plans to achieve them. These students are working hard to stay in school.
