As the very first program NAAF established when it began in 2011, the After-School Program has solidified itself as the beating heart of the community’s educational endeavors. This quarter has boasted numerous achievements. At the forefront, NAAF would like to highlight two District learners who exemplify the dedication and potential within GuVo.
We celebrate the recent achievements of Jonathan S. Jr. and Donavan D., whose stellar performance landed them on the 2nd Semester 24-25 Faculty List at Subiaco Academy. Their dedication to both academic excellence and cultural heritage is immensely commendable. Moreover, Evrin E.'s GED graduation stands as a testament to perseverance and educational commitment.
Community events have been a vibrant part of our program this past quarter, with the District’s young learners enjoying numerous events and a deeper connection to all the community has to offer. In October, students participated in the 2024 Fall Festival, which took place on October 18 and kicked off the season with info booths, games, food, and costume contests, creating spooky fun and community spirit. Also in October, on the 25th, NAAF’s littlest learners enjoyed pumpkin picking at Ruth’s Oidag as part of the Ce:Ce:m A’Al o O’odham Ñeñok program to celebrate a safe Halloween.
Students were also able to engage with the community in other fun and creative ways. The NAAF Holiday Card contest started on November 1, inviting artists from various age groups to showcase their creativity for a $50 gift card prize. The contest culminated with the winners being announced on November 18, and many students also participated in the Winter Night Extravaganza parade on December 7. This event was held in collaboration with the GuVo District and Tohono O’odham Nation Head Start Team, who kindly invited NAAF to participate in a great event filled with laughter and cheering as NAAF’s little ones paraded proudly. Finally, these events culminated in a Hot Cocoa Social on December 20, where students enjoyed games, arts, crafts, raffles, hot cocoa, and memorable moments with Santa.
While these events provided students with memorable experiences and strengthened community bonds, NAAF’s work was not all fun and games. NAAF partnered with groups throughout the Nation to install five new Little Free Libraries at the Al Jek Recreation Center, Pisinemo Recreation Center, and schools in Sells and Hikiwan. These libraries provide easy access to books, promoting literacy and fostering a love of reading among community members of all ages.
Finally, regarding NAAF’s reading and literacy efforts, NAAF’s littlest learners enjoyed a visit to the Ajo-Salazar library in Ajo. Ms. Daniela from the library did activities using scarves, songs, dance moves, and instruments to engage the students and introduce them to books. The students were very excited to take part in the day and receive their very first library cards!
