In November 2024 Guåhan Sustainable Culture moved to protect the 50-acre Hamamoto Fruit World property from military development, preserving the land and its agricultural abundance for our local community. One year later, the GSC Food Resiliency Hub has become our home for educating our youth, supporting local farmers, bringing community together, and fighting for a sovereign, sustainable, and food secure future for Guåhan.
In October we collaborated with Famagu’on Farmers to host their annual Fall Farmers Market here at the Food Resiliency Hub. This was the first time this Farmers Market was held in southern Guåhan, a long underserved part of the island, and it was the largest event GSC has ever hosted here. Over a thousand community members came out throughout the day to celebrate and support our local farmers, youth vendors, and small businesses. We even created a “Fun Farm” for families to enjoy, complete with a sakate maze, you-pick sunflower garden, and other games for kids to enjoy. It was a wonderfully successful event that embodied so much of the potential that the Hub has to offer, and left us feeling inspired to host more farmers markets into the future.
Also in October we organized the 2nd annual Agriculture Symposium in collaboration with the Northern Guam Soil and Water Conservation District. The Symposium gathered farmers, food entrepreneurs, backyard growers, educators and youth committed to building resilience by fostering community and supporting sustainable agriculture development. At the end of the Symposium attendees had the opportunity to tour the Hub and learn more about our programs, ongoing projects, as well as our guiding vision for the space as a center for agricultural learning, support, and development.
The Fall Farmers Market and Agriculture Symposium were the highlights of our work these last few months, but at the same time the Hub has continued to host our youth education fieldtrips, various programs workshops, community gatherings, and so much more. As we celebrate one year at the Food Resiliency Hub, we’re heading into 2026 with some exciting new projects and programs that we can’t wait to share out with our community!
Meggai yan saina ma’ase’ for your support! We’ll see you in the new year!
