As a part of our rehabilitation services that we provide at Cedar Village, our occupational therapists provide a vital service for older adults – helping them determine if they are capable of driving. For individuals who are receiving therapy services following hospitalization, we test them on their driving skills before they return home.
We provide a comprehensive two hour out of the car assessment to determine reaction time, visual acuity, physical functioning and cognition as it relates to safe driving.
Following this test, there is an “In car” Assessment which evaluates safety behind the wheel including starting and stopping, following directions, turning, parking, and highway driving.
Our goal is to ensure that patients receiving therapy services at Cedar Village will be able to operate a car safely. Often we help them come to the realization that they may need to drive with restrictions when they return home. Cedar Village has a therapy car for patients to practice getting in and out and loading the trunk with groceries and personal items.
As spring is arriving, progress is being made on our warm water Aquatic Therapy Center. It is scheduled to open in the summer and those individuals who have been deemed safe to drive will be able to return to Cedar Village for warm water therapy if their doctor prescribes it.
