Griesbroek Nature Reserve - Update August 2026

By Tom Schildermans and Dirk Geenen | Conservation Managers

Over the past months, our dedicated volunteers, partners, and visitors have continued to make a meaningful contribution to the conservation and enhancement of Griesbroek Nature Reserve.

Habitat Management and Conservation

Every two weeks, volunteers gather on Saturday mornings to carry out essential management activities. Recent efforts have focused primarily on maintaining species-rich grasslands through mowing and the use of conservation grazing with sheep. These activities help preserve the ecological value and biodiversity of the reserve.

As part of a regional litter awareness campaign, volunteers also organized two successful clean-up events, removing waste from the area and helping to keep the reserve a clean and welcoming environment for both wildlife and visitors.

Environmental Education and Community Engagement

Griesbroek continues to play an important role in connecting people with nature.

  • Pupils from the Hulsen Primary School visited the reserve for a guided nature walk, learning about local wildlife and habitats.
  • Students from Secondary School ‘t Spoor once again supported the reserve as part of their annual end-of-term community project. Their efforts focused on restoring sections of heathland by removing encroaching vegetation and reopening valuable open habitat.

These educational initiatives help inspire the next generation of nature conservationists while providing valuable hands-on experience.

Monitoring and Research

Scientific monitoring remains an important part of our management approach. During the first quarter of the year, waterbird surveys were conducted in January, February, and March.

In addition, dedicated volunteers and researchers contribute to several monitoring programs, including:

  • Glanville Fritillary Butterfly monitoring
  • Beautiful Demoiselle monitoring
  • Fortnightly groundwater measurements using monitoring wells

These long-term datasets provide valuable insights into the health of local ecosystems and help guide future conservation measures.

Notable Wildlife Observations

One of the most exciting sightings of recent months has been the regular presence of young Eurasian Spoonbills. These birds, originating from a nearby breeding colony, have been visiting Griesbroek frequently, highlighting the importance of the reserve as a valuable feeding and resting habitat.

Guided Activities

Several guided walks have taken place throughout the reserve, offering visitors the opportunity to discover its unique landscapes, wildlife, and conservation efforts firsthand.

Challenges: Prolonged Drought

Unfortunately, Griesbroek has been severely affected by the persistent drought conditions experienced throughout the spring and summer. Water levels have dropped dramatically, and the River Grote Nete nearly dried up completely in some sections. These extreme conditions place significant pressure on local habitats and wildlife, underlining the growing importance of active conservation management and long-term ecological restoration.

Looking Ahead

The ongoing protection of Griesbroek depends on the commitment of volunteers, partners, and supporters. Sponsorship helps us continue habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, environmental education, and climate resilience measures, ensuring that this valuable nature reserve can thrive for future generations.
