Our 4th annual g4g day @ Brussels was held at the International School of Brussels and we welcomed 180 girls and 60 volunteers for a fun day of science. This year some of the workshops were run by greenlight girls themselves in which they prepared interactive science labs to engage students aged 11 - 15 years old. The day consisted of workshops from all areas of 'STEM' - Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering such as DNA extraction of fruits, Design your dream house, Invent and save the world, Visual Programming with Penguins, Breakdown and Rebuild a computer and learning about careers in STEM. Also new this year was our Science Library corner in which participants were invited to inscribe a message in a science book that will be sent to Uganda and Cameroon to start science libraries in local orphanages and schools.

A few special items to mention that made this event even more special…

For the first time ever in g4g history (that is – if an organization as young as ours can already have a history) – some greenlight girls from previous events were workshop leaders at the mature age of 15+.  What was amazing was that they came to us with this idea – and this has given the inspiration to the participants to ask if they can do the same next year.  Their workshops were well prepared, the science was clearly explained and the participants enjoyed the hands-on learning that they presented.

We were very lucky to have RadioX at the event for a live broadcast during the entire day – many girls volunteered to give their views about science on the air and we cannot wait to share the final product with you!

Enthusiastic ISB Teacher, Nikki Vreugdenhil, implored us to allow her younger students to join as they were so excited about science – so for the first time for our Brussels event, we had a small group of 9-year olds participate in our 11-15year old event.  They ended up being the most confident and vocal in our last session when we asked the girls to speak in the plenary session to tell us what they learned.  One of the littlest of girls, whose lab coat dragged on the floor behind her, ‘Princess Scientist’ was one of the most outspoken girls in the entire event and loved to share her learning with everyone (and an amusing anecdote that our volunteers loved… we asked her if she wanted to be interviewed on the Radio and she told us, “Oh, that’s okay – I’ve already been on the radio many, many times”).

We also got a chance to hear how the man from the photonics workshop went and picked germs off the street (“yuukkyyy”) and then went on to tell us how fast germs move in water!

And just a last message from everyone, https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152253097277262&set=vb.151369344889171&type=2&theater

Also in December, we held a fundraising event, the Winter Science Social:

Earlier in December, we help a small Christmas gathering and a second in our series of Science Socials, the Winter Science Social. We had a mixture of activities available for guests such as wine tasting thanks to Alfonso and his wines from Spain. Some Chutnney Tasting from Diane and the presentation of her book "the taste of Molecules". We also had a presentation of Photographs from photopgraphic students! For the kids we had a 'x-mas ornament' decoration corner. We also raffled off some great gifts for xmas. We raised a little funding but still need to raise plenty more, so please help us my sharing with your family and friends and being updated on our work and what we do.

If you are located in Brussels you can even come and visit us or volunteer with us on a project! Just email us on info@greenlightforgirls.org.

Dear all donors

We are pleased to update you on our activities since our last report 3 months ago. We have been very busy in the last months and have held 3 greenlight for girl’s days since we last spoke to you: one in the SouthCoast, US and a second one in Ouro Branco, Brazil and for the first time ever we launched in Athens, Greece, just yesterday on October 12th. All three events were a complete success and if you would like to see some pictures of the girls please visit our Facebook page or sign up for our monthly newsletter.

We also have 2 upcoming greenlight for girls days: the fourth annual one in Brussels, Belgium on November 16th and for the third time in Kinshasa, DRC on December 7th! Once again we are looking for volunteers, workshop leaders and sponsors for these events so please contact us if you would like to be involved.

If you are in any of these regions we encourage you to get in touch with us and come see what we do first hand, and find out where your donations have gone. It is a day where you can be inspired and feel fulfilled with your efforts in helping these girls.

We are however, still a long way away from reaching our goals. Despite the fact that we keep holding activities and events we lack a big source of funding and have been fighting to keep going, thus your donations are truly appreciated!

Please share our work with friends and family and we will keep brining you more exciting news and events!

All the best from the g4g team.

We are happy to give you the first update on our "give girls a greenlight for science" project.

We are still at the fundraising stage for our project through globalgiving as well as some independent fundraising social events. Thus far we have recieved some donations from both channels and are organising activities to raise more.

The money raised through these activities will go directly towards the following activities which we are very happy to announce! The first is our second annual greenlight for girls day in Ouro Branco, Brazil on August 13 - 17, the first ever greenlight for girls day in Athens, Greece on October 12th and the fourth annual greenlight for girls day in Brussels on November 16th! We are pleased to bring these events to the relevent regions through the hard work of the g4g team and network as well as the generous donations from individual donors and organisations.

In the next report we will update you on how our g4g days in Brazil and Greece went but for now we leave you with pictures of our events last year. We look forward to updating you again soon and thank you for your generous donations!
