Growing Young Environmental Stewards Through Tree Monitoring
Tree monitoring activities continued across all five partner schools in Tharaka-Nithi County during this quarter, strengthening the progress made in previous reporting periods. The prolonged rains experienced during the season greatly supported tree growth and survival, with many trees thriving exceptionally well across the schools.
The impact of the rains was particularly visible in the fruit trees, some of which have already started bearing fruits. This created great excitement among both students and teachers, as learners were able to witness the direct results of their environmental stewardship efforts. Students continued to actively care for the planted areas through spot weeding, mulching, and general maintenance to support healthy tree development.
The 360 student environmental stewards remained actively engaged in monitoring tree growth, health, and biodiversity using the CEGA Tree Growth & Health Tracker. Learners regularly observed and recorded the condition of the trees while also noting wildlife interactions around the school compounds.
The continued monitoring and care of the 400 fruit trees is contributing to stronger survival rates while advancing the long-term vision of establishing resilient school food forests that support ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, and improved nutrition within the school communities.
Raising Young Global Climate Champions through Creativity
During this quarter, we supported two schools in Nairobi County in using drama and visual art as creative tools for climate education and advocacy. The initiative served as an engaging entry point for students to explore climate change, regeneration, and sustainability through drama, visual art, and environmental awareness activities.
The program engaged over 450 junior high school students and teachers, inspiring young learners to use creativity as a voice for environmental action. One of the highlights of the quarter was a moving drama performance by 11 talented students during their school’s Easter Concert.
With our support, 25 students from the two schools created 12 powerful artworks reflecting their understanding of nature, environmental conservation, and today’s climate challenges. The artworks sparked important conversations within schools and their wider communities.
