This quarter, support from GlobalGiving enabled Communities EverGreening Africa to take another step toward our goal of planting 2,000 fruit and indigenous trees across six schools in Kenya while engaging 3,000 children in climate education and leadership. We expanded tothree new schools in Tharaka Nithi County, where 400 fruit trees were planted after teachers received training and students were prepared to care for them. A fourth school has also been identified and will begin planting when the rains arrive.
Our school partners remain at the heart of this initiative. At one of our partner schools, for example, students enthusiastically joined their environmental club to register and adopt trees using our Tree Growth Tracker. Each child measured height, counted leaves, and recorded biodiversity visits—turning science into hands-on learning. Mugambi, a 10-year-old pupil, proudly adopted a mango seedling and shared: “This is my tree, and I want to see it give fruit one day.” Meanwhile, two previously participating schools received follow-up support, with environmental clubs caring for existing trees and preparing to replace any that did not survive. Teachers noted that the school grounds are becoming greener and cooler as young trees begin to grow above the grass.
We are also grateful for the essential support from partner schools and organizations that have contributed seedlings and technical assistance. Together with students, teachers, and these partners, we are laying a strong foundation for long-term impact. Across all schools, excitement is growing as teachers and learners recognize the benefits for nutrition, biodiversity, soil health, and microclimate improvement. With the rains approaching, children are committed to watering and protecting their trees. Thanks to your support, this initiative is not only regenerating degraded school grounds but also helping cultivate a generation of climate champions—one tree, one school, one child at a time.
