Warm greetings from No One Down Relief Organization (NODRO).
We are pleased to share our latest progress report for the project “Green Futures: Empowering Ethiopian Youth.” Through this initiative, NODRO is working to equip young people with environmental awareness, green skills, leadership opportunities, and sustainable livelihood pathways that contribute to both community development and climate resilience.
During this reporting period, we made significant progress in engaging youth in environmental conservation activities, green entrepreneurship, climate awareness campaigns, and community-based sustainability initiatives.
Project Overview
The Green Futures: Empowering Ethiopian Youth project aims to empower young people to become agents of environmental sustainability and community transformation.
The project focuses on:
- Environmental education and climate awareness
- Youth leadership development
- Tree planting and ecosystem restoration
- Green entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities
- Community engagement and environmental advocacy
- Sustainable waste management and recycling initiatives
Key Challenges Addressed
- Youth unemployment and limited livelihood opportunities
- Environmental degradation and deforestation
- Low awareness of climate change impacts
- Limited participation of youth in environmental decision-making
- Inadequate community-based environmental initiatives
- Poor waste management practices
Key Achievements (March – June 2026)
During this reporting period, the project achieved the following:
- Trained 450 youth on environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and sustainable practices
- Supported 120 young people in developing green entrepreneurship and livelihood initiatives
- Planted over 15,000 indigenous and environmentally suitable tree seedlings
- Conducted 18 community environmental awareness campaigns reaching more than 6,500 community members
- Established 8 youth-led environmental action groups
- Organized 12 community clean-up and waste management campaigns
- Engaged schools and community institutions in environmental education activities
- Strengthened partnerships with local stakeholders to support youth-led environmental action
Early Impact & Beneficiary Stories
Youth Leading Change
A 22-year-old participant from Addis Ababa shared:
"Before joining this project, I had little understanding of how environmental protection could create opportunities for young people. Through the training and support provided, I have started a small recycling initiative and become an advocate for environmental action in my community."
Observed Changes
- Increased environmental awareness among youth and community members
- Enhanced youth participation in local environmental initiatives
- Improved community engagement in tree planting and conservation activities
- Strengthened leadership and entrepreneurship skills among young people
- Greater commitment to sustainable waste management practices
- Improved community understanding of climate change adaptation measures
Community Participation
Community engagement remains central to project implementation:
- Youth volunteers actively participated in tree planting and environmental campaigns
- Community leaders supported awareness and mobilization activities
- Schools collaborated in environmental education sessions
- Local stakeholders contributed to conservation and sustainability efforts
- Community feedback mechanisms informed project improvements
This participatory approach has strengthened local ownership and sustainability.
Challenges Encountered
Despite encouraging progress, several challenges were observed:
- Limited resources to meet growing youth demand for training opportunities
- Climate-related factors affecting seedling survival in some locations
- Insufficient environmental infrastructure in target communities
- Economic challenges affecting youth participation in entrepreneurship activities
- Need for expanded technical support and mentorship services
Response Measures
NODRO has taken the following actions:
- Increased technical support and follow-up for youth groups
- Strengthened monitoring of tree planting and maintenance activities
- Expanded partnerships with local institutions and environmental stakeholders
- Enhanced entrepreneurship mentoring and business development support
- Promoted community ownership of environmental initiatives
Monitoring & Accountability
NODRO continues to maintain robust monitoring and accountability systems through:
- Regular field monitoring visits
- Beneficiary registration and tracking systems
- Environmental activity monitoring tools
- Community feedback and complaint mechanisms
- Periodic outcome assessments and learning reviews
Current Key Performance Indicators
- 450 youth trained in environmental sustainability and leadership
- 120 youth supported through green entrepreneurship initiatives
- 15,000+ tree seedlings planted
- 6,500+ community members reached through awareness campaigns
- 8 youth environmental action groups established
- 12 community clean-up campaigns conducted
- Multiple schools and community institutions engaged
What’s Next? (July – October 2026)
In the next phase, NODRO plans to:
- Expand environmental and climate resilience training for additional youth
- Increase tree planting and ecosystem restoration activities
- Support more youth-led green enterprises
- Strengthen environmental advocacy and community awareness campaigns
- Enhance partnerships with schools, local authorities, and environmental organizations
- Promote innovative recycling and waste management initiatives
