Following the heavy long rains between March and May 2024 which caused massive flash floods and mud slides in several parts of Kenya including Nairobi County, many residents in Mathare and Kibera slums of Nairobi were displaced and lost their household belongings and livelihoods. These included the vulnerable older persons and their households.
AgeWatch Africa in partnership with MEDAIR assisted over 280 older persosns in Mathare slums to receive cash transfer support to assist with resettling during and immediately after the floods disaster. Between June and Septemeber 2024, after the floods subsided, the partnership carried out Psychological First Aid (PFA) in Mathare and Kibera slums to assist the flood victims to cope with the trauma and to equip them to handle subsequent flooding or any other disasters. This program benefited over 500 households and over 1,100 individuals from both slums (Mathare and Kibera).
During the PFA project we noted spikes in needs, especially food and shelter. Shelter was especially more acutely affected as the government proceeded to demolish any temporary structures that housed the floods victims, in fear of escalated flooding impact in case the rains continued. The situation in Kibera slums was more dire as many households continued to take shelter in mud-built structures that continued to pose threats. With your kind and loving support, we look to co-create longer lasting solutions for these victims that include older persons, orphaned vulnerable children (OVC) and people living with disabilities (PLWDs).
Thank you for your continued support as we make entry into Nairobi City to work with and for the vulnerable households in Nairobi City County.
In gratitude,
Richard Waindi, Founder & CEO.
