MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLING FOR ADOLESCENTS
ACTIVITY REPORT (JANUARY TO MARCH 2017)
Awareness Meetings
Awareness raising meetings with adolescents were held at the community and school level. These meetings primarily focused on their day-to-day issues that have to be faced by them effectively with more strength and courage. The counsellor made efforts to identify the problems of the adolescents by noting their shared responses during the awareness meetings.
36 Community Meetings took place, covering a total of 932 adolescants.
NB: Due to preparation for annual examination, awareness meetings were not held at the school level.
Number of cases handled
There were 17 girls, and 5 boys cases in the community. There were 159 girls and 74 boys cases at school level.
Once all cases approached the centre and intervened by the counsellor, a total of 255 cases were followed closely.
The adolescents who approached the centre were provided with both counselling and medical help. Detailed assessment, intervention and follow up sessions within the community were held at the centre as per the requirement.
Student Counselling Session in Process
To summarize, of the total of 255 adolescent cases, 22 cases (9%) were intervened at the centre and 233 (91%) were intervened at school level. Out of the total cases, 253 cases (99%) fall under counselling category, while 2 cases (1%) fall under psychiatric category. None of the cases fall under advice category which needed any kind of other investigations. Out of the 253 counselling cases, 208 cases (82%) faced academic problems, 18 cases (7%) faced emotional/ behavioural/ personal problems and 27 cases (11%) are affected by family issues.
Adolescents at the primary stage (age group ranging from 12-15 years) seem to face more problems. Majority of them are going to school followed by school dropouts. Most dropouts are from Std.8 and 10.
The counselling process in the schools is in progress and will be completed in the next quarter.
