Following the preliminary meetings held with the teachers, students and principals of the two municipal schools under discussion, the adolescents who approached our centre, consulted with in community or at schools have been facilitated by both individual as well as group counselling as per need. Also parental counselling was done wherever needed. The adolescents were also provided with medical facilities through the services of a visiting psychiatrist.
A total of 243 cases were handled by AWAG, out of which 137 cases approached the organization's centre and 106 cases were intervened with in the school by the counsellor.
The adolescents who had approached the centre were provided withboth counselling and medical help whereas adolescents in school were instructed to seek medical help from the centre. Detailed assessment and interventions were undertaken as per need at the centre, within community or at school.
All the adolescent cases fell under the categories of counselling cases and psychiatric cases. The counselling cases were further divided into different sub categories according to their problem areas. Individual counselling cases included adolescents coming alone wherein either parent was not willing to join in or parents were not needed to join in. Parental counselling sessions included cases wherein sessions with both adolescents and parents were necessary for getting better results to cope with the situation.
While it was observed that maximum number of cases (229) fall in the counselling category, further subcategorization was needed to understand their problem areas more precisely. The issues of the adolescent cases kept overlapping but were categorized mainly focussing on their primary concern. The cases broadly fall under three main areas :
The counselling sessions undertaken by AWAG are helping the affected children, their parents and teachers to understand and cope effectively with the situation.
Monitoring and follow-up of the above cases will be undertaken in the coming months.
