MENTAL HEALTHCARE FOR ADOLESCENTS
AWAG’s intervention in relation to mental healthcare with adolescents is concentrated in economically backward areas of Ahmedabad wherein parents of these children are predominantly labourers. Majority of the parents are illiterates and do not have the capability to understand or guide their children during mental distress. The common adolescent issues known are adjustment problems, relationship issues, educational issues, low self-esteem, family issues etc. which seemed to be very difficult to cope with both for the adolescent and the parents. This leads to high drop-out rate and weak academic performance.
In view of closure of schools due to Covid-19 pandemic, awareness raising meetings were held in communities, which mainly focused on their day-to-day issues that have to be faced by them effectively with more strength and courage. The counsellor made efforts to identify the problems of the adolescents by noting their shared responses during the awareness meetings.
A total of 150 adolescents were covered during these meetings over the last quarter.
Following this, as per need each child was allotted time for one-to-one counselling. The sessions address children’s emotional needs and equip them with relevant coping mechanisms.
Counselling provided them with:
In adolescents where severe mental health symptoms were visible, they were provided free treatment by the consulting psychiatrist.
