Big Updates from Kallpa + Repartnering Information

By Jacob Marling | Director of Finances

Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,

These past three months have been incredibly busy and important with respect to our partner, campaigns, and internal structure.

As in any relationship, communication is an integral part of ensuring two organizations are on the same page. This fact is central to what makes our model unique -- we work for constant communication with our partner and focus on ensuring that your contributions go to projects that the communities we work in value. However, constant communication can be a struggle sometimes, even more so in a time of transition. Near the end of December our Partnerships committee was informed that our two primary contacts from Kallpa Iquitos, Manuel and Frida, would no longer be working with Kallpa in Pampachica. Eager to get in contact and establish a new line of consistent communication with Kallpa, our Partnerships coordinators reached out to the new Kallpa coordinator to introduce themselves. We were only able to secure sporadic communication until mid-February, when we had an in-depth conversation with our contact. She explained how challenging running Kallpa's programs has been -- given how committed the youth had been to the leadership of Manuel and Frida, the transition proved difficult for youth to accept. Most significantly, our contact informed us that Kallpa's programs in Pampachica would conclude in December 2015. This came as a complete surprise to our Partnerships coordinators, who then reached out to Kallpa's national office to get an explanation. As it turns out, the international grant that comprised the majority of Kallpa Iquitos' revenue stream will end in December 2015, and they have not been able to secure an extension.

Wanting to be proactive about our situation, a Partnerships representative met with our National Office during Spring Break to discuss the situation. Since Kallpa in Pampachica will only be operating until next December, GlobeMed at the University of Rochester is currently in the process of researching and collectively choosing a new organization that we will partner with beginning next Fall. As soon as we have finalized our new partner, a new project page will be created with detailed information.

This is huge news for GlobeMed at the University of Rochester and for you as donors who have been the support that has backed this organization and helped us and Kallpa Iquitos thrive for the past five years. The donations received up to August 31, 2014 will continue to go to funding the projects that are currently taking place in Pampachica. As Kallpa in Pampachica will not be operating past December 2015, the funds raised after August 31 will go to the organization we are re-partnered with.

The news about Kallpa is as fresh to you as it is to us, but we view this as an opportunity to reflect on the flaws in our past partnership and focus on ways to ensure that we have a strong, communicative relationship with our new partner.

We wanted to be as transparent as possible in this report and feel that it is your privilege as donors to know as much as we do. With transparency comes the possibility of alarm, and we understand that this is as much of a surprise for you as it was for us. However, if you have any concerns, suggestions, or feedback please do not hesitate to contact us by email at rochester@globemed.org.

In solidarity,

GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
