Youth in Pampachica Collaborate

By Jacob Marling | Director of Finance

Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,

The past few months have brought about a great deal of change, excitement, and optimism for the future at Kallpa and within our GlobeMed chapter in Rochester. Just two weeks ago we held our biggest event of the fall semester, our third annual Art Gala. The event was a big success, and we are excited that the donated funds will enable Kallpa to continue implementing their programs in Iquitos to promote youth engagement and empowerment. Additionally, our primary contact at Kallpa Iquitos has changed to Rosse Mary, who is energized and committed to Kallpa's mission.

Much of Kallpa's programming this year revolves around allowing youth in different neighborhoods in Pampachica to identify problems where they live and work together in their neighborhood centers to develop creative solutions to these problems. Many of the youth centers supported by your donations serve as academic centers where children come to do their schoolwork and spent time with each other. At one center, youth noticed that while a great deal of time was spent on schoolwork, there were very few books to read and refer to at the center. To combat this issue, students at this center decided that they would dedicate their project to creating a library in the youth center. Kallpa also continues to support a sexual health clinic at one of the youth centers in Pampachica to encourage youth to make informed decisions on their sexual health.

Our chapter has been communicating with Kallpa biweekly throughout the semester. Our partnerships committee and Kallpa have begun discussing plans for the summer when interns from our chapter connect for 7 weeks with Kallpa to help with programs, work on program evaluation, and build relationships with people in Pampachica.

As the New Year approaches we want to thank you for your continuous support that allows Kallpa to advocate for their community and work with youth leaders to develop community based solutions to problems facing Pampachica. Your support is tremendously appreciated!

Have a great holiday season and a happy New Year!

In solidarity,

GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
