The 2022-2023 School Year is now in full swing and Global Kids is back in action in classrooms, school communities, and afterschool programs making a positive impact on hundreds of students and educators across New York City and Washington, D.C.! Global Kids (GK) educates, inspires, and activates youth to succeed in school, achieve postsecondary success, and take action on critical issues facing their communities and the world. Our culturally responsive, anti-racist, youth voice-led approach upholds human and children’s rights by dismantling barriers to education and prepares young people to be stewards of human rights as they learn about the world around them. Our programs are especially critical as we continue to recover from the pandemic and the many challenges it illuminated to racial and economic equity.
Summer Programs & Field Trips
It was a busy and exciting summer here at Global Kids! Educating, activating, and inspiring our youth doesn't stop just because school is not in session; GK youth in New York City and Washington, D.C. engaged in a multitude of educational experiences and field trips. Students in NYC attended the opening of the Jackie Robinson Museum in Manhattan, met with experts in international affairs at the United Nations, visited the nation's capital in Washington, D.C., and immersed themselves in important human rights issues during our 3-week "U.S. in the World" summer institute, hosted at the Council on Foreign Relations in Manhattan. This exclusive collaboration with the world’s leading international affairs think tank gave 11 students the opportunity to immerse themselves in timely foreign affairs topics. Participants worked to develop peer education projects focusing on U.S. foreign policy issues addressed in the summer program. In November, GK will partner with the Council on Foreign Relations again to host our Annual Benefit!
In partnership with the Marion Barry Youth Leadership Institute and The Generations Dialogue Project at The George Washington University, Global Kids students from our NYC and DC sites came together for a special visit from the U.S. Department of State's Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley. Ambassador Abercrombie-Winstanley discussed her professional journey and experience in foreign policy, and dedicated time to answering questions from the group. NYC and DC students also met to tour Howard University, a highly accredited historically Black university in Washington, D.C.
This summer in our DC programs, students met with international development experts at the offices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), toured the U.S. Capitol building, visited the African American History Museum, and learned about the work of international consultants during a field trip to the Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) offices. DC students also had a chance to spend the day with the Chemonics International team to learn more about the work they do in the international development field. Our partners at Chemonics crafted an entire day of intentional workshops, speakers, and fun to present to the students. The day left the students feeling empowered and informed about potential career opportunities that await them as they continue to pursue their passions.
GK Golf Classic
In June, GK held its first annual Golf Classic fundraising event. From experienced golfers crushing it on the back 9 to our Team GK Youth Golfers learning the ropes, everyone had an amazing time supporting Global Kids' college readiness efforts. Proceeds from the June 28th event at Pelham Country Club will help ensure that the young people we serve are prepared for post-secondary success and that they have the means to both access college and stay engaged. Our programming supports students as they navigate the college admissions and financial aid processes, while exposing them to a wide range of career paths and potential majors and presenting them with opportunities to visit college campuses and professional offices.
Thank You, NIKE!
We are honored that NIKE selected Global Kids, Inc. to receive a generous grant through their Black Community Commitment initiative in support of Global Kids’ commitment to promoting the social-emotional wellness of the 99% BIPOC youth that we serve. In September, NIKE invited some of our students to attend a pre-grand opening party for their new store location in the Bronx. Student attendees participated in an exclusive shopping experience, received back-to-school kits, and enjoyed music and refreshments. NIKE will be honored for their commitment to the Black Community at our upcoming Annual Benefit on November 1st, 2022.
We're Moving!
GK is moving to a brand new office space in New York City! GK's headquarters will now be located at 102 Madison Avenue, and construction on the new space will commence shortly to transform it into a welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring space for all of our students and staff. The new GK headquarters will feature a private entrance for student participants in our citywide programs to access the space directly. Students shouldn't have to navigate complicated building entry procedures through an unfamiliar third party; this will be THEIR space, and we want them to own it!
Until the move is complete, please note the following temporary mailing address:
