Choose Love, Not Hate – GK-NYC Annual Youth Conference held June 3rd
On June 3, 2022, over a hundred middle and high schoolers from New York City as well as visiting students from our DC programs convened for our annual student-led youth conference. The focus of this year’s conference was Hate Crimes, a timely topic identified and selected by Global Kids participants themselves. Students led and participated in a day of workshops, presentations, and performances and engaged in meaningful discussions around the topic of hate crimes. Student participants and their chaperones were joined at Hunter College by special guest speaker Hassan Naveed from the NYC Mayor’s Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes.

Global Kids Make Final College Decisions
On May 1, 2022, seniors across the country made their final decisions on which college they would attend in the Fall. Global Kids is celebrating seniors who have made their college choice from our program schools, highlighting them on our social media pages. These students who endured most of their high school years during the pandemic have remained resilient and are ready for college. Many will be attending schools in New York City and New York State, including Baruch, Stony Brook University and Albany State.

GK-DC Spring Celebration
On Thursday, May 19th, 60 Global Kids students, staff, and supporters gathered on the beautiful Apollo Apartments rooftop to celebrate our DC programs. This was our first in-person get together since the start of the pandemic in 2020. Attendees included individual and corporate donors, institutional funders, community leaders, GK Alumni and staff, members of the DC Advisory Council, and current GK students!
During the event, we heard from GK alum, Ayanna Shingler. Ayanna is an HR Consultant working in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion space. Ayanna shared: "With the support of Global Kids; I gained an interest in learning languages. I went to college to study Anthropology and International Relations, interned with the Congressional Black Caucus, helped native Washingtonians as a community organizer, and I’m currently working as a consultant with an aspect of my job focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am a proud cheerleader of this program and other programs like it that really helped me find my way. I hope you are able to see the value of the program from everyone you will speak with today."
We also heard from high school student and current GK participant, Deovion Barrett. Dee, a senior at the Columbia Heights Educational Campus, shared: "Through Global Kids, I've been able to learn about new things, and also gain community service hours for scholarships which is also nice. This program can help other teenagers like me because when we learn it's fun. It's not just words being spoken to us, we actively participate and do hands-on projects. One thing I love about Global Kids is that there is never a dull moment."
GK-DC Annual Youth Conference held on May 21
On Saturday, May 21st, we hosted our Global Kids-DC Annual Youth Conference with 22 youth leaders from all of our sites. Youth leaders chose the topic of Climate Justice to highlight. For six weeks prior, they prepared activities and practiced facilitation. During the conference, they used their knowledge and skills to deliver engaging workshops to educate their peers on climate and environmental and climate issues. During the program, we were also joined by two keynote speakers, Mel Kopolow, VP for Sustainability at Albright Stonebridge Group and David Silvero, GK-DC Young Professionals Committee.
