We're currently in the middle of April, which for many means it's World Autism Awarness Month. This year, we at the Global Autism Project have decided to go a slightly different route. While awareness is certainly valuable, and we've come a long way, it is not enough. It is time we take that awareness one step further and focus on global autism acceptance. There are an estimated 70 million people in the world with autism and 85% of them live in developing countries. The combined under- and unemployment rate for autistic adults is 90% in the United States alone.
The Global Autism Project is working to bridge the global gap in the understanding and acceptance of autism. We collaborate with our partners locally and abroad to educate communities about autism, eliminate the stigma, and ensure all autistic people everywhere are fully accepted and have access to supports and tools to achieve their dreams.
With this in mind, our campaign this World Autism Acceptance Month is called Project: Acceptance. All month we're sharing videos, images, and other stories from the autistic community to create a conversation around what acceptance means.
