Adopt A Senior – Restoring Safety and Dignity for Our Elders & Veterans
Since our last update, Reaching Back Inc. has continued our vital mission of helping low-income seniors age gracefully in safe, stable homes. Through the “Adopt A Senior” project, we’ve completed 18 home repairs, directly improving the lives of 24 seniors across our city and county. Repairs have included installing new HVAC units during record summer heat, replacing unsafe electrical wiring, and reinforcing rotted floors that posed severe fall risks.
One of our recent success stories is Ms. Mildred, an 82-year-old widow and retired school city worker who had been living with no heat and faulty electrical wiring. With your generous support through GlobalGiving, we repaired her furnace and updated her electrical wiring, preventing health and safety hazards. She now says, “I feel safe in my home again.” We also assisted Veteran Mr. Dale whose AC went on during the hottest summer months. His outside AC unit was fixed, and he stated, “Reaching Back is a God-send”!
Despite our progress, the need is still overwhelming. We currently have more than 750 seniors on our waitlist in urgent need of essential repairs like wheelchair-accessible ramps, grab bars, and walk in showers to prevent falls. Many are veterans or live alone without family nearby. Each day they remain on the list; they risk major health complications or accidents due to unsafe living conditions.
With your continued support, we aim to reduce this list and restore dignity, safety, and independence to the seniors we serve. We are deeply grateful for your partnership and invite you to follow our progress as we continue this life-changing work. Together, we are making a difference—one home, one senior at a time.
