Elimu grew up in Arusha with his mother and five siblings after his parents separated due to domestic violence. His mother’s harsh discipline made home life difficult, affecting his education and making his school attendance irregular. At just 11 years old, he dropped out of school and ran away, living on the streets of Arusha before moving to Dar es Salaam, where he lived on the streets for seven years. There, he was influence by his peers to make poor decisions, he fell into substance use and felt disconnected from society.
Thankfully a Railway Children worker met Elimu during their outreach work, and introduced him to the Youth Association. Initially skeptical due to past negative experiences, Elimu saw the positive transformations in his peers that were part of the Youth Association and eventually decided to join. Through life skills and one-on-one sessions, he learned about the effects of substance abuse and was encouraged to distance himself from negative influences.
The program’s entrepreneurship training inspired him to start selling wipes, helping him move away from theft and drug use. The programme also provided Elimu with rent support, which allowed him to transition off the streets, and later, a business grant helped him establish a secondhand shoe business. We provided mentorship and business training, allowing him to gain confidenceand begin building a stable future.
As he embraced positive change, Elimu earned the trust of his community and secured a part-time cleaning job while continuing to grow his shoe business. We supported him with life skills sessions on hygiene, stress management, and behavior change to help reinforce his transformation. Elimu described his transition as moving “from darkness to light.”
Today, Elimu is financially independent and free from substance abuse. His thriving business, stable employment, and renewed sense of purpose highlight his journey from hardship to self-sufficiency.
This was all made possible through the support and mentorship provided, thanks to your support – thank you!
