Since 2018, KCH Orthopedic workshop enrolls at least 15 youth with disabilities annually to take up one-year courses in fabrication of assistive devices and other marketable products.
The main objective of this training program is to increase production of assistive, access and utilization of these assistive devices by children with disabilities in the communities. The program additionally, aims at empowering youth with disabilities with skills to enable them to start income generating projects or get employment in the different rehabilitation centers across the country.
The 2022 training program started in February 2022 and will end February 2023. 10 youth with disabilities (2 females: 8 male) were recruited from 6 districts of Uganda including Soroti, Kamuli, Kyotera, Mpigi, Masaka and Namayingo.
By the end of the training period the trainees are expected to have skills to fabricate assistive devices like wheelchairs, orthopedic shoes, crutches, SFABS, AFOs, walkers, standing and sitting frames among other products.
