KATALEMWA CHESHIRE HOME FOR REHABILITATION SERVICES
Report about Children with Disabilities that benefited from Assistive Devices
Case 1
Richard (Not real names) is a 17 years boy with diplegic cerebral palsy living in Nsango B, Buyinja sub county Namayingo District. He was identified during an outreach clinic that was conducted at Syanyonja Health Centre III in Namayingo District. On assessment, the Occupational Therapist (O.T) found out that he had good fine and gross motor skills of the upper limbs but with difficulties in crawling due to the flexion contractures at the knee joints for both limbs. Currently Richard moves while crawling and complains of consistent pain at the knee joint. The O.T recommended that he would benefit from using a tri-cycle to facilitate his mobility but unfortunately the caregiver would not manage to get the funds to acquire one from Katalemwa because she is a peasant farmer with no other source of income. The team from KCH during a Home-Based Care visit took his measurement for a tri-cycle and its was fabricated for him.
Just like other children in the community, he participates in mining of gold to earn a living and has a plan of acquiring some money to start a business since his disability doesn’t favor mining. He was very excited about acquiring a wheel chair because he will move with ease.
Case Story 2:
Kato (Not real names) is an 8 years’ boy with cerebral palsy living in Syanyonja A village, Buyinja Sub County Namayingo District. He was identified during an outreach clinic that was conducted in Syanyonja. On assessment of the child, the Occupational Therapist identified the strength of the child and recommended construction of parallel bars and a Posterior walking frame.
The field team from Katalemwa during a Home-Based Care visit managed to construct the parallel bars for the child and on the next visit realized that there was a great improvement in mobility. On that note, the child was measured for a Posterior Walking frame and it was provided to him. The caretakers are grateful for the support and hope that his mobility will stabilize.
Case Story 3
Benson (Not real names) is a 31/2 years old boy with cerebral palsy living in Buyima village Bulopa sub county, Kamuli district.
The child was identified during a home-based care visit and on assessment by the occupational therapist, the child had ability to walk but with support on objects nearby. Therefore the Katalemwa Cheshire Home team availed a posterior walker to him and he is very happy about the support.
