By Aileen Eunicia P. Balon-Abaca | Resource Mobilization Officer
or this time period, forty-two (42) children were sheltered, given nutritious meals with daily rations of milk.
Six (6) kids underwent in-house Occupational Therapy in Tahanan ng Pagmamahal. Prior to these therapy sessions, these children lacked fine locomotor skills, had difficulty in following instructions and threw frequent tantrums. They were all assessed to have global delays.
After four (4) months of these sessions, noted improvements were seen in their social interaction with other kids and how they generally behaved in the shelter.
Most notable indicators of improvement for the older toddlers are as follows: responds and reacts when a houseparent communicates with them; proper grip or hold of their crayons and pencils; initiate in writing their names; know how to clean after themselves after using the comfort room; can correctly point to different parts of their bodies; can solve simple foam board puzzles; can brush their teeth; can pronounce and trace write letters of the alphabet; and can pinpoint different colors and animals in their story books.
Other toddlers have also shown less tantrums. They are able to follow instructions of the teacher and to accomplish all the exercises and activities given to them. In the therapy sessions of the children the houseparents assigned are also being coached and guided how to follow through in the consistent behavioral adjustments of these children.
One seven (7) year old boy underwent speech therapy. After a series of sessions, he is now able to converse well and clearly express what he thinks and what he feels. He has developed and further improved his interaction with other children and the staff.
All the children are now participating in their classes. They display a sense of achievement and self assuredness in their abilities as they would proudly show their “stars” as soon as they get back from school (note: star are seal of good grades for daycare children). They are also actively involved in the interaction with guests with outreach activities in the shelter.
Thank you for your continued support and love to our kids. May the good Lord reward you for the outpour of blessings you have given and continually give us.
