Project Report | Oct 11, 2017
Journey of Aggressive to Friendly Child.

By Nagachandra | Project Leader

Abdul (name changed) is 10years old studying 5th Grade in Chandra English School. His father is a driver by profession and mother a housewife. He has two older siblings studying in II PUC and 9th grade.

Abdul was not in the good books of his teachers. Not many of them liked him. Apart from troubling friends, he was backwards in studies and hardly completed his homework.

His mom was worried about her son’s behaviour. Abdul never paid attention to studies. According to his mother, he was good in maths when compared to other subjects. His maths notebook was very neat and this showed his interest in the subject. He was known for his mischief in class and this increased day by day.

As usual, the facilitator was early to the session. He could not believe what he saw. The facilitator saw a little boy limping to the office room. His leg was bleeding.  The curious facilitator tried to see what happened. He also saw Abdul standing near the office room. He hit his friend hard with a refill on his leg and was bleeding. The facilitator took Abdul to the activity area and asked calmly what happened. There was no reply. Abdul was burning with anger and the comforted by him. According to him, his classmate made fun of him as the person with a “devil’s eye”. Abdul could not control his anger and thus hit him.

After this incident, the facilitator asked him to apologise and he refused. He was still angry. After repeated efforts, Abdul apologized. The facilitator tried to help him overcome his anger. Abdul was asked to meet the facilitator every day without fail. As they met they discussed the various things, especially how to treat bad behaviour. The facilitator gave him a task to speak good things he has done for the day. Abdul followed this exercise. Slowly there was a change in him and this was observed by his teachers. He was no longer troubled others. His friends started sharing good things about him.

A few days after Abdul’s mom expressed happiness about her son in the parent’s teachers meeting at school. One could see the real joy in his mother as her son improved.
