White Canes, New Paths to Independence

By AGIZO | Coordinator

In North Kivu, more than 1,400 blind and deafblind people live in conditions of extreme poverty, often without access to a basic white cane or the training needed to use one safely. For many children, this means being kept at home because families fear that they may get lost, injured, or become victims of insecurity. It also means missing school, struggling to reach health facilities, and depending on relatives for even the simplest daily movements. Our project, Give White Canes to Blind Children in Congo, aims to change this reality for 1,000 blind and deafblind people by providing quality white canes, practical mobility training, and follow-up support. A cane may appear simple, but for a child or adult who has spent years confined to the home, it can be the first step toward freedom, confidence, education, and participation in community life.

The project is currently in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase. We are working to identify qualified mobility trainers and potential learners who will benefit from the program, while preparing the identification, distribution, training, and follow-up process. The project has a total funding target of US$7,500, and no funds had been raised at the time of this report. Rather than presenting planned activities as completed, we are sharing this information openly with our supporters because transparency is essential to our work. Once resources are secured, the project will provide white canes to selected beneficiaries, organize hands-on mobility training, and conduct follow-up visits to assess progress and ensure that the canes are being used properly and safely.

We are deeply grateful for our collaboration with GlobalGiving, which gives this local initiative an opportunity to reach a wider community of international donors and bring greater visibility to the needs of people with visual disabilities in North Kivu. With the support of GlobalGiving and generous individuals around the world, we are confident that we can mobilize the resources needed to reach our goal of 1,000 beneficiaries. The expected impact goes far beyond the distribution of a physical tool: children will have a greater opportunity to attend school, adults will be able to move more independently, families will experience less fear and dependency, and people who have often been isolated will have greater opportunities to participate in society. Over time, improved mobility can contribute to education, access to healthcare, livelihoods, and stronger social inclusion.

We invite donors, partners, and friends of this project to stand with us. Your contribution can help place a white cane in the hands of someone who needs it and support the training that turns that cane into a tool for independence. Every donation brings us closer to our goal of reaching 1,000 blind and deafblind people in North Kivu. We thank every person who believes that disability should never be a reason for a child to remain at home or for an adult to live in isolation. We also extend our sincere appreciation to GlobalGiving for helping us connect this important local need with a global community of people willing to make a difference. Together, we can replace fear with confidence, isolation with participation, and dependence with independence—one white cane and one person at a time.
