In Special Families (FE) the Wheel Chair Workshop is central to life because Mobility is needed for independence. Just imagine if you could not get around on your own. Who would you go to for help? Is there anyone who could help you? what would you do? Would you just remain immobile and isolated.
Well here in FE we all know that one person who we would go to for mobility is Jordi. Jordi actually grew up in FE. His early years were marked by constant convulsions. When FE started its mental health program and we were able to get a top notch Neurologist to come from Managua to Matagalpa once a month Jordi was one of the first patients. As his mother continued to be active in FE Jordi grew and started working in the park without any convulsions. We began to see that he had talent in fixing things and he moved to the Wheel Chair Workshop. Jordi has been working there ever since. He has received numerous workshops and training from brigades and has helped in the shipment of mobility aides to areas in northern Nicaragua. Probably helping over 200 children and adults to become more mobile, learning the language of mobility: This child needs head support, this child needs leg support, this adult needs a standard, this person needs a reclining chair. He speaks this language with three other young people in the workshop all of whom are deaf. So Jordi not only knows the language of mobility but is fluent in the language of the deaf.
His skills have continued to improve and basically he is seen as the person you go to if you want to become more mobile. Nicaragua is still in a socio political crisis and the taller is the program most affected, because we can’t find a way to receive wheel chairs to distribute. There is no wheel chair factory in Nicaragua. We are working at it but we are still being able to help people become mobile. Saint Julie who was paralyzed for 22 years of her life during a time when there were no wheel chairs said "Patience, patience and more patience, one step at a time. "So we want to thank you for helping us take one step at a time to keep giving mobility with dignity.
